In today’s globalized economy, the efficient movement of goods across borders is paramount for businesses to thrive. However, ensuring compliance with customs regulations presents a significant challenge for importers, exporters, and the industries reliant on international trade. Recognizing this need, Blinn College, in collaboration with the National Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association of America (NCBFAA), has initiated the Blinn Customs Specialist Scholars Training Program.
This innovative program aims to address the shortage of trained Customs Compliance Specialists by providing specialized training to individuals seeking entry-level employment in customs brokerage and freight forwarding. Through this initiative, Blinn will host and facilitate the delivery of the NCBFAA Educational Institute’s Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) Certification Program. The certification course includes a combination of online modules, quizzes, and a final exam, where students will acquire essential competencies in customs regulations, documentation, and compliance procedures. The program is delivered asynchronously with students completing their coursework and their certification exam within a 3–6-month period. Successful completion of the certification exam opens doors to employment opportunities in customs brokerage firms and freight forwarding companies.
Accessibility through scholarships and outreach
Recognizing the financial barriers that students may face, this program is offering $750 scholarships to 20 eligible candidates, offsetting the entire cost of the course and exam. To date, 12 students have received the scholarship with 1 having already obtained their certification.
Additionally, Blinn College and NCBFAA facilitate industry and media outreach activities to promote awareness of the program among high school graduates, veterans, and individuals seeking career transitions. In April, the programs will be hosting a Cross-Border Trade Career Roundtable. This event will discuss the CCS Certification Program and scholarship, as well as feature panelists from the cross-border trade industry to discuss career opportunities.
