Preempting African Swine Fever in Texas with research

Texas A&M AgriLife Research scientists assess a Texas tick’s potential to spread disease

African swine fever (ASF) is a very contagious and fatal disease that can infect domestic and feral swine. This virus is not a threat to human health, but if it enters the United States, it would devastate our swine industry and food supply.

To help ensure that this devastating disease stays out of Texas, a nearly $1.5M project by CBTS, and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, is addressing a critical current knowledge gap concerning the potential, or vector competency, of a Texas-specific Ornithodoros turicata tick to transmit the disease.
